The 'Ohi'a blossom is celebrated on the Island of Hawai'i, home of Pele (goddess of fire and volcanoes), and Hawai'i is the home of the Merrie Monarch Festival each year (the celebration of the Hawaiian Hula and Language). We are excited to have these new mini 'Ohi'a Lehua pieces debut just in time for the annual Merrie Monarch Festival this year! This bracelet is a size S (adjustable 6-7") but can be made slightly larger into a M/L size (adjustable 7-8") by mentioning this size in the comments when checking out. If no size is mentioned, the bracelet you receive will be a size S (6-7") as photographed.
The 'Ohi'a Lehua is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and is steeped in the History of Hawaii. According to legend: Pele, the fire goddess, had been smitten by an attractive man named 'Ohi'a, but 'Ohi'a was already in love with a woman named Lehua. Blinded by jealousy, Pele transformed the 'Ohi'a into a gnarled, scaly tree. When asked to undo what she’d done, Pele refused. Lehua sought help from her aumakua (ancestral gods). However, the aumakua instead transformed Lehua into the red blossom of the ohia tree, forever linking the lovers. Picking the tree’s flowers causes rain because the lovers are being separated and the rain represents the two lovers crying.
